Glasgow City Council has released a progress update on the extensive redevelopment of George Square, confirming that groundworks on the west side are now finished. This milestone has allowed paving to begin within the hoarded area for the first time, offering the first glimpse of the site's future aesthetic.
Significant changes to local traffic management are taking effect today, 11 May. The south carriageway has closed between The Piper Bar and Greggs to facilitate a new phase of construction, which is expected to last roughly three months. To mitigate the impact on a road network already strained by the Cathedral Street sewer collapse and the Union Street fire, the junction at Greggs and La Vita will remain open. NRS has conducted a letter drop to local stakeholders to coordinate loading and servicing requirements during this closure.
On the north side of the Square, work on the carriageway is nearing its final stages. Setts have been laid along the straight sections, and junctions at North Frederick Street and North Hanover Street are due for completion shortly. The council aims to reopen the north carriageway to traffic by 7 June.
Further temporary disruptions are scheduled for West George Street, which will close between Buchanan Street and George Square from 18 May to 27 May for resurfacing. During this window:
Businesses on Nelson Mandela Place can access servicing via Bath Street and Buchanan Street between 6pm and 10am.
A temporary taxi rank will operate on the east side of North Hanover Street.
Heritage restoration remains a priority, with work on the Sir Walter Scott Monument currently on schedule. Stone course replacements are expected to finish by the end of May, allowing for the partial removal of scaffolding and the start of cleaning on the lower sections. Meanwhile, on the east side, groundworks are underway behind the Cenotaph to install the utilities required for the Square's new street lighting system.
In other areas, construction on the south footway between South Frederick Street and Hanover Street is almost complete, though the Hanover Street section will be finalised at a later, yet-to-be-confirmed date.
