Three decades have passed since Edinburgh's Old and New Towns were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1995, and the city is marking the milestone ahead of World Heritage Day on Saturday 18 April.
The designation recognises the Old and New Towns together as one of the world's most remarkable urban landscapes. Working with Historic Environment Scotland and Edinburgh World Heritage, the Council aims to safeguard the Site's character and significance for future generations.
This partnership focuses on conserving the medieval Old Town and the planned Georgian New Town, including Edinburgh's famous skyline. The contrast between the Old Town's tight, twisting closes and the New Town's gracious, wide avenues is part of what makes the area unique. Around 4,500 individual buildings fall within the Site, which is home to about 30,000 residents.
Reflecting UNESCO's emphasis on engaging communities and young people, the anniversary provides opportunities for residents and visitors to learn more about this historically important and internationally renowned part of Scotland's capital.
A photography competition, run with partners, invites entries until the end of October capturing what inspires people most about the World Heritage Site. There are 12 categories, from the Medieval Old Town to the Living City.
Winning photographs in each category will feature in a year-long calendar, on sale in Museums and Galleries shops, at Historic Scotland sites and at Edinburgh World Heritage events, with proceeds supporting the Site's ongoing management.
For younger residents, a Primary Four class from Granton Primary will collaborate with a freelance artist over the summer term. Pupils will visit the Museum of Edinburgh and take a special educational tour of the World Heritage Site.
Classroom sessions will guide the children to paint their impressions of the area. The finished artworks will be exhibited at the Museum of Edinburgh from 5 October to 10 January for the public to enjoy.
Residents are encouraged to explore the Old and New Towns World Heritage Site this week and submit their favourite images to the photography competition. Good luck and happy snapping.
