Fife Council is spearheading local efforts to promote the impact of work-based learning as part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2026. This year's campaign, themed 'Working for Scotland,' focuses on how apprentices provide a critical talent pipeline for employers while delivering measurable returns for the national economy.
There are currently approximately 12,000 apprentice employers across Scotland, supporting a workforce of over 40,000 individuals across Foundation, Modern, and Graduate Apprenticeships. Fife Council has reaffirmed its commitment to these programmes, viewing them as essential tools for succession planning and a primary method for upskilling the workforce to meet future industry demands.
The modern apprenticeship family in Scotland has evolved to include three distinct pathways:
• Foundation Apprenticeships: Providing school pupils with real-world work experience and work-based learning.
• Modern Apprenticeships: Offering paid, work-based training for new and existing employees to earn qualifications on the job.
• Graduate Apprenticeships: Enabling employees to pursue work-based learning up to Master's degree level, integrating academic study with professional skills development.
Councillor Altany Craik, Fife Council's spokesperson for finance, economy, and strategic planning, said: "Apprentices have an essential part to play in helping businesses and the wider economy thrive – both now and in the years ahead. Showing our backing for apprenticeships has never mattered more.
"Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2026 gives us the chance to highlight the real benefits that apprenticeships bring. We remain dedicated to providing meaningful job and training opportunities for young people across Fife. It's a great opportunity, and while apprentices will be expected to deliver high-quality work, they will also receive guidance and support from skilled staff whose knowledge and experience will ensure every apprentice gains the strongest possible training."
The Council continues to advocate for these roles as a way to provide people from all backgrounds with the technical skills required to thrive in a changing labour market.
