Network Rail has successfully delivered a £4 million suite of infrastructure improvements across the Inverclyde line, aimed at strengthening bridges and supporting structures. The intensive eight-day programme, which included significant activity over two consecutive weekends, was designed to enhance the long-term safety and operational resilience of this key rail route.
Specialist engineering teams operated across several strategic locations to carry out essential repairs and renewals. Key work included:
• Greenock: Structural repairs and the installation of new concrete sections to reinforce the walls supporting the railway.
• River Gryffe Bridge: A complete replacement of the main bridge deck alongside steelwork repairs to increase load-bearing strength.
• Georgetown: Essential steelwork remediation on the structures supporting the line at Houston Road.
• Langbank: Steel reinforcement beneath the bridge at Station Road and the replacement of platform sections with modern, high-durability materials.
The project is part of a broader commitment to modernise Scotland's rail infrastructure, ensuring that the network can withstand future demands and provide a more dependable service for commuters.
Ross Moran, Route Director at Network Rail, said: "Our engineers have delivered vital upgrades that will keep the Inverclyde line reliable for years to come. Strengthening key structures is essential to maintaining a safe and resilient railway, and we're grateful to customers for their patience while we carried out this important work."
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, added: "We'd like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding while the essential improvements on the Inverclyde line were carried out. The upgrades will deliver long-term benefits for customers, improving the reliability and resilience of services on the route for years to come. We recognise that engineering works can cause inconvenience, and we're grateful for the support our customers have shown throughout the project. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on board."
