Students from St Monans Primary School recently visited the construction site of the new RNLI Anstruther Boathouse to gain insight into the development of the coastal landmark.
Main contractor Clark Contracts is currently delivering the project, which will provide a contemporary base for volunteer crews and a permanent residence for the advanced Shannon-class lifeboat that was delivered to Fife last year.
The existing station has served the RNLI in Anstruther since 1904. Despite undergoing six previous upgrades during its long history, the facility is no longer considered fit for purpose. In 2020, planning permission was granted for a replacement following a joint decision by Fife Council and the RNLI to relocate further along the coastline.
Positioned on the opposite side of the East Basin Carpark, the new structure will eventually replace the old station, which is scheduled for demolition. This approach allows the emergency lifesaving service to remain fully operational throughout the build, avoiding the costs and logistical challenges of using temporary accommodation.
Work is currently focused on the first phase of the project. This involves the construction of a new sea wall and launch ramp, necessitating complex engineering works within the water.
