Major infrastructure projects designed to revitalise Bishopbriggs and unlock significant regional investment have reached a critical milestone.
East Dunbartonshire Council approved the Full Business Cases for the "Place and Growth Programme" in December 2025, paving the way for construction to begin this spring.
The programme, supported by the Glasgow City Region City Deal, represents a total investment of £46.77 million. It is primarily funded by £31.96m from the UK and Scottish Governments, with the remaining capital provided by the Council.
The initiative focuses on two transformative developments:
1. Westerhill Development Road (WDR)
The WDR involves the construction of 2km of new and upgraded carriageway connecting the existing Westerhill Road to the A803 Kirkintilloch Road.
• Purpose: To bypass non-essential traffic away from Bishopbriggs town centre and unlock strategic business sites within the Westerhill Regeneration Area.
• Timeline: Construction is scheduled to start in March 2026, with an estimated completion date in late 2027.
• Design: The route was refined following public consultation and includes environmental mitigations such as wildlife tunnels and active travel paths for walking and cycling.
2. Bishopbriggs Town Centre Civic Space
A new, flexible public area will be created between the Triangle Shopping Centre and St Matthew's Church.
• Features: The space will include a performance area with a canopy, increased greenery, seating walls, and improved lighting to create a safer evening environment.
• Impact: The project aims to reduce vacancy rates and support local traders by making the town centre more attractive to visitors.
• Timeline: Work is expected to commence in March 2026, with the civic space opening to the public by late 2026 or early 2027.
Councillor Gordan Low, Leader of East Dunbartonshire Council, stated: "I am pleased to confirm that our City Deal Place and Growth Programme is moving ahead and is now closer than ever to being delivered. Both projects will mean millions of pounds worth of external capital being invested locally.
"The WDR will help to improve transport links, unlock key business sites, create employment opportunities and reduce congestion, while the creation of a Civic Space in Bishopbriggs will usher in a new era for the town centre."
The business cases have now been submitted to the Glasgow City Region Cabinet for final sign-off, which will trigger the release of the necessary funding. In the meantime, the Council continues to liaise with local landowners—including ongoing discussions with Morrisons regarding the town centre land lease—to ensure a seamless transition to the construction phase.
