Fife Council has achieved a significant project milestone with the successful installation of the new Mountfleurie Bridge over the Levenmouth Rail Link this past weekend.
The £5.8 million steel structure is a crucial component of the wider Levenmouth Connectivity Project, designed to enhance active travel and community links across the area. Spanning the new railway line between the areas of Kirkland and Mountfleurie, the crossing is expected to open to the public in the Spring of 2026.
Once fully complete, the 100-metre bridge will establish a safe, scenic, and fully accessible route for walking, cycling, and wheeling, effectively linking services, schools, and communities on both sides of the railway line.
Fife Council spearheaded the design and planning for the project, delivering the bridge after securing funding from the UK Government. The Council commissioned Network Rail and its contractor to carry out the construction and installation of the structure.
Councillor Alistair Suttie, Convener of the Levenmouth Area Committee, welcomed the milestone: "It is wonderful to see this important route re-joining our communities once again. It has taken a lot of hard work by many folk to bring this about. This crossing between Methil and Leven will restore a path which has existed for a long time and has been sorely missed during the development phase of Levenmouth Rail Link. Now, in it's new form, it will give access to even more of our community. This is an important step in its delivery and I can't wait to see it being open and fully accessible to all."
The installation marks the culmination of months of detailed engineering work and preparation. Over the next few weeks, contractors will complete the necessary finishing works, including the installation of decking, safety features, and landscaping, in preparation for the official opening in 2026.
