Glasgow City Council's development frameworks for Drumchapel and Easterhouse are progressing, with an update on the long-term spatial visions given to a council committee.
These two frameworks are part of nine city-wide plans that identify areas for significant change and opportunity, providing essential guidance for future construction, planning, and strategic investment.
The council's Planning team is coordinating the delivery of the associated Action Programmes, involving work on development phasing, financing, and critical infrastructure investment to realise the vision for each area.
Drumchapel Development
The Drumchapel Local Development Framework (LDF), approved in June 2024, has a central focus on regeneration and building better connectivity. A key element is the Drumchapel Town Centre Regeneration Project (DTCR), which secured £14.98 million from the UK Government, matched by £1.664 million from the council. The DTCR is progressing well, with four workstreams underway, including:
• The conversion of Garscadden House into a new Drumchapel Town Hall, featuring a relocated library, co-located services, and a new civic square.
• The retrofitting of the non-operational Drumchapel Park Pavilion to function as an active travel hub and community café.
• The assembly of housing sites around Hecla Square.
• Improvements to the road layout and public realm on Kinfauns Drive.
In terms of new construction, the development at Katewell Avenue (now Cleddans Grove) by Cruden Homes is nearing completion, with 48 units anticipated. Furthermore, work has started on a Net-zero Masterplan for Drumchapel, which will utilise a place-based approach with nature-based solutions to create a climate-resilient neighbourhood and unlock new development.
Greater Easterhouse Development
The Greater Easterhouse Strategic Development Framework (SDF), approved in November 2024, aims to significantly improve the urban form and economic vitality of the north-east of the city. Key construction and development actions include:
• The creation of a comprehensive Town Centre Masterplan for Easterhouse and surrounding vacant sites to foster a more attractive and vibrant centre.
• Work on the Re-use of Brownfield Land is advancing, with marketing briefs for land in Cranhill and Easterhouse already produced.
• An application for 249 new homes has been submitted by Avant Homes within the Community Growth Area, with the assessment guided by the SDF principles.
• A pre-application process has been supported for the Blairtummock Destination Play project, which aims to align with the SDF's vision.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Housing and Development at Glasgow City Council, concluded: "Both Drumchapel and Greater Easterhouse are areas of the city ready to take the next steps in their development in terms of new housing, public realm, Town Centre regeneration and improvements in access to active travel. These development frameworks... will guide how these communities evolve in the coming years."
