SSEN Transmission has officially launched a new learning partnership with Peterhead Academy designed to inspire the next generation of energy professionals in the North East of Scotland. The partnership is closely linked to the ongoing Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) project—the UK’s biggest-ever electricity transmission project.
Through the initiative, SSEN Transmission and its EGL2 contractors (BAM, Prysmian, and Hitachi) will provide Peterhead Academy pupils with a wide-ranging programme, including:
• Career Talks and Mentoring: Guidance from industry experts.
• Site Visits: Access to the EGL2 converter station site near Boddam.
• Challenge Projects: Involvement in the Powering Futures Challenge Programme (SCQF accredited) and Industrial Cadets activities, focusing on real-world industry problems.
The partnership aims to bring real-world relevance to classroom studies, encouraging future talent in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. The first event took place at the newly opened EGL2 visitor hub, where pupils heard from representatives about career journeys and opportunities in the energy sector.
Nicky Gadsen, Attraction and Engagement Lead at SSEN Transmission, commented: "Together with our contractors we will offer a wide range of expertise to assist pupils in their learning, and through the EGL2 project they will have the chance to gain first-hand experience of a major energy project combined with practical skills development, creating the ideal learning environment."
Gerry McLuskey, Head Teacher at Peterhead Academy, expressed delight: "We believe the young people of Peterhead can become the skilled workforce of the future for our developing energy sector... We are confident this partnership with SSEN Transmission will introduce our pupils to the excellent current and future career opportunities available to them in the North East."
