A substantial £1.3 million infrastructure improvement project is set to begin at Aberdour's Silver Sands, with Newlay Civil Eng Ltd appointed to carry out the necessary construction works.
The multi-faceted scheme is intended to tackle long-standing infrastructure challenges caused by the beach's immense popularity, particularly during peak summer visitor numbers.
The construction phase will commence this autumn, outside of the main visitor season, and the overall package of works is expected to be completed by summer 2026. Funding for the project is anchored by £750 thousand from The Scottish Government's Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund (RTIF), managed by VisitScotland, complemented by £400,000 from the Scottish Government's Place Based Investment Programme and an additional £150,000 already secured.
The planned construction and accessibility improvements include:
–Parking Infrastructure: Significant upgrades to the existing car parking facilities.
–Accessibility Works: Construction of accessible beach access and a new Changing Places toilet facility.
–Sustainability Infrastructure: Installation of new EV charging points and secure cycle racks to encourage sustainable transport use.
–Amenity Upgrades: General upgrades to the existing toilet facilities and the installation of new outdoor furniture.
The construction aims to transform the site into a more mobility-friendly and welcoming destination, while also easing pressure on the existing infrastructure.
Cllr Altany Craik, Fife Council's Spokesperson for Finance, Economy & Strategic Planning, highlighted the commitment to the site: "Silver Sands is a jewel in Fife's coastal crown, and this investment reflects our commitment to enhancing the visitor experience while protecting the area's natural beauty.
"By improving infrastructure and accessibility, we're supporting sustainable tourism and ensuring that Silver Sands continues to thrive as a welcoming destination for both locals and visitors."
Caroline Warburton, VisitScotland Destination Development Director, emphasised the importance of the work: "Making the beach more accessible to all, and the proposed upgrades to the toilet facilities and outdoor furniture will not only make this a much more mobility-friendly destination but also a more attractive and welcoming one.
"The development of new EV charge points and secure cycle racks will encourage more people to consider using sustainable transport; which combined with improvements to the parking infrastructure will not only help alleviate issues for visitors but also local people who use the beach.
"These developments will continue to improve the experience for visitors and help alleviate pressure on the infrastructure, to ensure this scenic area remains sustainable for years to come."
