A new report from the Scottish Empty Homes Partnership reveals that Dundee has fewer empty homes than it did 12 months ago.
While the figures are a step in the right direction, most of the city’s unoccupied homes have been empty for more than a year.
The report indicates there were 1,014 empty homes in Dundee in September 2024, of which 557 were classed as long-term empty. This represents a reduction of 1,724, or more than half, when compared to the September 2023 figure.
Kevin Cordell, convener of Dundee City Council’s neighbourhood regeneration, housing and estate management committee, said that while the numbers are a "testament to the hard work" of the council, it is "critical" they continue to address the issue.
The figures also show that just over 1.4% of the 71,700 homes in the city are unoccupied at any one time. According to Cordell, this "compares favourably" with other council areas, but the focus remains on bringing as many empty homes back into use as possible to help meet housing needs and reduce homelessness.
