Glasgow City Council has provided an update on the progress of the George Square redevelopment.
Works are continuing well, with the contractor nearing completion on the north footway of West George Street between Buchanan Street and Dundas Street.
Beginning today, Tuesday, 26 August, work will start on the next section of the footway, which extends from Dundas Street to the entrance of Queen Street Station. As a result, the temporary taxi rank on Dundas Street will revert to its original location on West George Street. The bus stop at Waxy O'Connors will also reopen, while the bus shelter between Dundas Street and Queen Street Station will be temporarily closed. This phase of work is expected to be completed by Sunday, 16 November.
At the City Chambers, work is being carried out in two phases to ensure uninterrupted access to the main entrance. For safety, the footway will be closed to pedestrian traffic, with a diversion route in place via George Street, John Street, and Cochrane Street.
Within George Square itself, hoarding has been adjusted to allow for ground testing for the proposed statue locations. Site clearance is also ongoing, with reusable materials being prepared for future use in the square and other city-wide projects. The council's communications team has developed a wayfinding plan for the square, which is expected to be installed in the coming weeks. The overall project is expected to be completed by August 2026.
