The Highland Council is moving forward with a plan to revitalise Inverness City Centre, building on the momentum of recent landmark developments, including the Inverness Castle Experience and the Victorian Market. The City of Inverness Area Committee has agreed to support the principles outlined in a new City Centre Review report, which proposes a strategic focus on improving the built environment, public spaces, and the overall visitor experience.
The proposal, which was developed in collaboration with the Inverness Partnership, recommends a number of key initiatives. These include a City Centre Masterplan to guide future development, with a focus on shopfront design, signage, and streetscape improvements. The plan also proposes enhancements to greenspaces such as Chapel Yard Cemetery and areas around the Old High Church, as well as improvements to street cleanliness, waste management, and infrastructure.
City Leader Councillor Ian Brown said: "With increasing footfall and a series of high-profile developments now complete, we have a unique opportunity to reimagine the city centre. This strategy is about creating a cleaner, greener, and more connected Inverness that reflects the pride of our community and the expectations of our visitors." The council also recognises the city centre's importance as a gateway to the Highlands, particularly for visitors arriving by coach and rail.
The committee has also agreed to establish a cross-party stakeholder group with representatives from local businesses, community organisations, heritage bodies, and faith groups. The group will work together to co-develop a City Vision and bring forward deliverable outcomes for the committee.
