Scottish Water has completed a £2.5 million investment on the island of Benbecula, which saw 11 kilometres of water pipeline replaced to ensure a reliable and high-quality water supply for the local community.
The project, which began in January 2024, involved replacing the water main along the South Ford Causeway between Benbecula and South Uist, as well as on rural land and road verges beside the A865. The work was delivered by Scottish Water's alliance partner, Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA), in collaboration with local contractor MacInnes Bros. The team was made up entirely of residents from South and North Uist, with a focus on supporting the island's economy.
As part of the project, CWA delivered water-related presentations at Balivanich and Iochdar primary schools, providing students with information about their water supply and how to conserve water.
Paul Milligan, CWA Communication Manager, said the project will benefit the community for years to come. The work is part of Scottish Water's country-wide capital investment programme, with similar projects ongoing at other sites in the Outer Hebrides, including Ness and Stornoway on Lewis.
