The Scottish Government has granted consent for the 4.1GW Berwick Bank offshore wind farm, a pivotal project located around 38km east of the Scottish Borders coastline.
This decision, which was the final major consent required, boosts Scotland's net zero ambitions and the UK's clean power mission. The project’s delivery is now subject to SSE securing a contract under the UK's Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme and reaching a final investment decision.
If fully delivered, Berwick Bank would become the world's largest offshore wind farm, capable of generating enough clean energy to power more than six million homes annually. The project has the potential to create 9,300 jobs in the UK at peak construction, with around 4,650 of those jobs in Scotland. Over its expected lifetime, Berwick Bank is estimated to inject £8.3 billion of value into the UK economy.
Stephen Wheeler, Managing Director of SSE Renewables, welcomed the decision, stating that the project can play a "pivotal role" in meeting the UK's Clean Power 2030 mission and Scotland's climate goals. He noted that SSE now looks forward to the UK Government delivering the "most ambitious CfD scheme yet" through the upcoming AR7 auction round to accelerate the delivery of homegrown, affordable, and secure clean energy. The project could increase Scotland's current renewable electricity capacity by almost 25%, helping the country work towards its 2045 net zero carbon emissions target.
