A major £4.5 million refurbishment project is scheduled for the scenic Kyle of Lochalsh railway line in the Highlands this autumn. Network Rail's investment aims to ensure the long-term reliability and safety of this vital transport link and tourist route.
The work will take place over a three-week period, from Saturday, 19 October to Monday, 10 November 2025. Approximately 4.5 miles of track between Achnashellach and Strathcarron will be upgraded, involving the replacement of worn rails, sleepers, and ballast.
To allow engineers to complete the work safely and efficiently, no trains will operate between Dingwall and Kyle of Lochalsh during the three-week period. ScotRail will provide details of rail replacement services in advance to help passengers plan their journeys.
Ross Moran, Route Director at Network Rail Scotland, commented: "The Kyle line is a much-loved part of Scotland's rail heritage, and few routes offer such scenic views of our landscape. This investment will help safeguard its future, ensuring it remains a reliable, sustainable travel option for both local communities and visitors for many more generations to come."
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, added that ScotRail will focus on "keeping people moving and getting our customers where they want to go" during the essential work.
The project also includes inspections of key structures like bridges and culverts, as well as clearing lineside ditches and drainage to prevent flooding and reduce weather-related delays. This refurbishment is part of Network Rail's ongoing commitment to improving Scotland's railway infrastructure.
