Scottish Renewables has welcomed the UK Government's pivotal decision on the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA), praising the commitment to a reformed national electricity market. However, the industry body immediately called for a fairer transmission charging system that directly benefits Scotland's burgeoning renewable energy sector.
Claire Mack OBE, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, stated: "The renewable energy industry has been consistently clear that Great Britain's electricity market must be reformed so that businesses and consumers can benefit from the most affordable forms of energy generation. We have also been clear that market reform must protect the unprecedented levels of private investment required to build the Scottish projects at the heart of the clean power mission."
Ms Mack commended the UK Government for what she described as "the right decision at this pivotal moment to support a reformed national market." She urged the industry to now come together to transform the energy system, which she believes will protect from future price volatility and secure the economic benefits of clean energy deployment across the UK.
A critical point for Scotland, as highlighted by Scottish Renewables, is the reform of transmission charging. "A reformed national market must grasp the nettle of transmission charging to finally deliver a fairer system for Scotland," Ms Mack emphasised. She expressed encouragement that the UK Government would be working with Ofgem to review the current charging regime, noting that this reform must complement the introduction of strategic planning and the rapid deployment of new transmission infrastructure.
"The design of an energy system that can cope with strategic reform whilst continuing to attract investment and navigate delivery challenges will need carefully managed," Ms Mack concluded, affirming that Scottish Renewables would continue its close collaboration with the government and all stakeholders to achieve optimal outcomes for the country as a fairer and more secure clean energy system is built.
