A significant £2.5 million upgrade to the electricity infrastructure is currently in progress between Banchory and Aboyne, undertaken by SSEN Distribution. This vital project, which involves collaboration with contract partner OCU, is set to bolster the reliability of power supplies for approximately 2,700 local customers and considerably increase network capacity.
The extensive programme includes the installation of 13 kilometres of new, upgraded overhead lines, which will be supported by over 200 replacement wooden poles. This comprehensive combination of new assets is designed to create a more resilient local network, better equipped to withstand the challenging Aberdeenshire winters. Furthermore, the upgraded transformers and lines will facilitate greater load transmission, crucial for supporting the growing demand from low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicle chargers and heat pumps in homes and businesses across the area.
Graeme Gill, SSEN Distribution's Construction Team Manager, highlighted the importance of the work: "This six-month project is a major boost to the network in and around Banchory and Aboyne, and one that will make a big difference to local supplies for many years to come when we finish the works in September." He emphasised the need for robust infrastructure against winter winds, noting, "we're replacing over 200 of the existing wooden poles with new, stronger versions – and by putting in 13km of new lines at the same time, this is a programme of work that will have a positive impact for many years to come."
Temporary traffic management has been necessary at various points to ensure safety during the construction phases, particularly when replacing overhead line sections that cross roads. SSEN Distribution has expressed its commitment to minimising disruption and thanked local drivers for their patience during these essential upgrade works.
