Argyll and Bute Council has announced the appointment of specialist roof contractors to undertake the extensive reconstruction of Helensburgh Leisure Centre's roof. This significant step follows a detailed assessment by the council and its insurers of the severe damage inflicted by Storm Eowyn, alongside immediate repair efforts and a competitive tendering process.
The next phases of the project will involve the completion of the technical design for the new roof and the procurement of long-lead items, such as the replacement roofing system. These preparations are set to enable the full reconstruction to commence in the autumn.
A report presented to a Council meeting today, Thursday, 26 June 2025, outlined the widespread impact of Storm Eowyn across Argyll and Bute, with the leisure centre being among the most significantly affected. The ferocity of the storm damaged the roof to such an extent that a complete replacement is necessary. Furthermore, the building's internal first floor will require extensive repairs to mechanical and electrical plant and equipment, as well as fixtures and finishes like wall and floor coverings.
At this stage, the council anticipates that Helensburgh Leisure Centre could re-open by March 2026.
In addition to reviewing the progress on repairs, councillors also acknowledged the projected loss of income for Live Argyll, the operator, while the centre remains closed. To mitigate this impact, the council has agreed to provide additional funding of up to £455,000 to support Live Argyll throughout the repair and recovery process.
Councillor Ross Moreland, Policy Lead for Finance and Commercial Services, commented: "Getting specialist contractors on site is another important step forward in what is a complex recovery process for the leisure centre. As well as affecting infrastructure, Storm Eowyn has had considerable financial impact across Argyll and Bute. Providing additional funding for Live Argyll is a reflection of that. The focus is on doing all we can to get the centre available again for use as quickly as circumstances allow."
The full report can be accessed on the council website under agenda item number 10. While the leisure centre undergoes these crucial repairs, Live Argyll has temporarily relocated its services, with details of these arrangements available on the Live Argyll website.
