Hands-On Construction Learning At New St Kentigern's Academy Wing

Construction News Image
The ongoing construction of a replacement wing at St Kentigern's Academy in Blackburn is serving as a unique learning opportunity, allowing students to gain valuable insights into the construction industry.

The major project, which involves rebuilding a significant proportion of the school due to issues with Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), is on track for completion in Spring 2026. Over 60% of the original school structure had to be demolished.

With a live construction site right on their doorstep, St Kentigern's Academy has collaborated closely with main contractor Heron Bros. This partnership has provided pupils with hands-on experience in various construction trades, enabling them to observe and engage directly with the real-life building process. This direct engagement offers learning opportunities that extend far beyond what could be taught in a traditional classroom setting, particularly benefiting students who have expressed an interest in different aspects of the construction industry.

St Kentigern's Headteacher Gerry Burns highlighted the benefits of the initiative: "Having a real-life construction project on our doorstep has provided some fantastic opportunities for our pupils. Working with skilled professionals from Heron Bros, the pupils have gained first-hand knowledge of different roles within the construction industry, such as joinery, architecture and project management."

Mr Burns further emphasised the practical skills gained: "Being able to offer our students a real hands-on learning experience will help prepare them for a range of career opportunities using vital skills, such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and attention to detail. As the construction project nears completion in Spring 2026, it's clear that the pupils who have participated in this programme will leave with a sense of pride, having helped to shape both the school's future and their own."

Once completed, the new wing will feature a modern reception area, a spacious canteen and dining area, a four-court Games Hall, Dance Studio, Fitness Suite, and a changing village. Additional facilities will include a performance area, a range of flexible learning spaces, a café, and nurture rooms, all designed to significantly enhance the learning environment for all students attending the school.

The construction work is being carried out while the school remains operational, with careful measures taken to minimise disruption and maintain high quality throughout the building process. Contractor Heron Bros is undertaking the construction on behalf of West Lothian Council and its development partner, Hub South East.
