Construction of the ambitious "Gro For You" community innovation campus in Tain has taken a significant leap forward, following a crucial £250,000 funding boost from responsible finance provider Social Investment Scotland (SIS). This investment is specifically earmarked to support the initial stages of construction work on the new facility, poised to become one of the most substantial local investments in the Tain area in recent years, with an anticipated opening in 2026.
Located strategically off the NC500 route and adjacent to the Glenmorangie Distillery, the Gro For You campus represents a unique construction project designed to foster sustainability, wellbeing, employability, and education within the local community.
The development will incorporate a range of distinctive architectural features, including several transparent sphere structures, known as geodomes, which will be constructed using eco-friendly recyclable materials. This design choice draws inspiration from renowned projects such as Cornwall's Eden Project and Walt Disney World’s Epcot, promising a visually striking and environmentally conscious build.
Beyond its innovative design, the campus will house extensive learning and training facilities, focusing on critical areas such as food production, hospitality, and green business skills. The construction also includes provisions for a public-facing visitor centre, complete with a café, farm shop, play area, and gardens, integrating community access directly into the fabric of the build.
Gro For You is a collaborative initiative by two local social enterprises, Farmer Jones Academy and Gro for Good. Their joint venture is focused on delivering a facility that not only provides essential training but also directly involves future beneficiaries in its creation.
Significantly, the project is already demonstrating its hands-on approach to skills development within the construction phase itself. With groundworks now complete, students undertaking qualifications are actively engaged in pre-fabricating elements of the build, including benches, play equipment, and fencing, that will be integrated into the final structure. Other learners are contributing to the site's environmental features, developing rewilding areas, a wildflower meadow, and planting trees for the campus orchard. This direct student involvement, from design to delivery, is a foundational principle of the Gro For You project, which aims to support at least 240 apprenticeships annually upon completion.
Sarah Mackenzie, co-founder of Gro For You, highlighted the immediate impact of the construction: "Construction at the community innovation campus is underway and we are already seeing the benefits of the project for local people, the economy and the environment. The facility is like no other, combining training and business support facilities with visitor experiences on one site."
She emphasised the project's role in addressing skills gaps in the Highlands: "Green technology and transferrable skills are a huge focus of what will be on offer at Gro For You, and we see these as essential elements of preparing the future workforce to enter the world of work."
The ongoing construction phases are crucial to realising these aims, laying the groundwork for a facility set to deliver significant long-term benefits for the region.
