Peel Ports Clydeport Invests £3m At King George V Dock

Construction News Image
Peel Ports Clydeport has invested £3 million in critical infrastructure at its King George V (KGV) Dock in Glasgow, aiming to accommodate the surging demand for handling massive wind turbine components destined for the renewable energy sector.

The UK's second-largest port operator has developed a new egress road at the KGV Dock, specifically designed to improve the movement of large project cargo through the port. This new road will provide a more efficient route for oversized components, mitigating previous operational delays caused by limited manoeuvring space for such large shipments.

This significant investment follows a record-breaking year in 2024 for the KGV Dock, during which over a thousand wind turbine components were processed. The port anticipates an even busier period ahead, with more than 100 turbines and 800 wind turbine components expected to be handled over the next 12 months.

Jim McSporran, port director at Peel Ports Clydeport, stated: "This significant investment will be hugely popular with the renewable energy sector, and help make our port an even more attractive option for larger wind component shipments. The fact larger project cargo will now more easily be able to move from the port to nearby main roads will support our aims to keep handling more of this cargo at the port in the months and years ahead. This project will also reduce delays and costs for moving such goods, as well as further improving the safety and efficiency of our port's operations, so it's a really positive move."

The construction of the new road was completed in recent weeks, involving the clearing of a previous route and the creation and surfacing of the new thoroughfare.

The KGV Dock's deep-sea facility is uniquely equipped to manage the handling of large-scale wind turbine components, facilitating the efficient transport of vital equipment to and from wind farm sites. Since 2005, the facility has processed components for over 1,200 wind turbines, accounting for more than 35 percent of Scotland's total installed capacity and surpassing any other port in the country. The facility, situated on the banks of the River Clyde, boasts a strong track record in transporting components for onshore wind projects.

With Clydeport anticipating further growth in wind component handling over the next year, this investment reflects the continued momentum within Scotland's renewables sector and will play a crucial role in helping the country achieve its sustainable energy targets.
