Dundee's senior councillors have welcomed significant funding from the Scottish Government that will support two major projects in the city: the redevelopment of the Dundee Museum of Transport and ongoing improvements in the Lochee area.
The Dundee Museum of Transport at the former Maryfield tram depot will receive £1 million from the Scottish Government’s Regeneration Capital Grant Fund. Councillor Steven Rome, Dundee City Council convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure, expressed his delight: "I am delighted that the Dundee Museum of Transport is receiving another major award to help in the journey to redevelop the former tram depot into a new attraction. There is real excitement building around the project and I would like to congratulate all connected with the museum for this significant step forward." The museum plans to renovate and move into the historic Maryfield Tram Depot by 2027, creating a world-class transport museum focused on sustainability.
Meanwhile, the Lochee Placemaking Project will benefit from £695,000 via the Scottish Government’s Vacant & Derelict Land Investment Programme. This funding will facilitate work to improve and unlock several vacant sites along Lochee High Street, supporting the development of much-needed social housing. Depute convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure, Councillor Siobhan Tolland, welcomed the investment: "This will assist in transforming currently derelict sites making them viable for the development of much needed social housing in the area."
A key element of the Lochee project, undertaken in partnership with Scottish Water, will be the installation of a new water and drainage system along Lochee High Street, Bank Street, and the former Bright Street church. This infrastructure upgrade is crucial for enabling future social housing development.
The Lochee Placemaking Project is already underway, with two shop units undergoing refurbishment and preparation work for a major new mural at Bank Street. Plans also include a new landscaped area at the corner of Bank Street and High Street, and the establishment of a heritage trail. Construction works are anticipated to begin in autumn and continue into early next year. The efforts have been supported by local groups, including the Lochee Residents and Tenants Association and Love Lochee, who have raised funds for the heritage trail and mural and assisted the council in securing external funding.
