One of Scotland's largest scaffolding providers, JR Scaffold Services, is applying its expertise to a unique transformation project in Glasgow's West End, supporting the significant renovation and reinvigoration of the B-listed St Peter's Church in Partick.
The specialist team installed approximately 3,000 square meters of Cuplok scaffolding around the exterior of the church across multiple phases. This extensive structure allows for the full restoration of the building's stonework, roof, and windows during the projected 20 to 40 week renovation project.
JR Scaffold Services undertook this complex task on behalf of their regular client, John Fulton Plumbing & Roofing, who were awarded the renovation tender by property consultants Brown & Wallace.
Due to the unusual and delicate nature of the iconic building's structure and its city location, the project demanded multiple site visits and a thorough design process involving a team of third-party scaffold engineers before the external scaffolding could be erected. This meticulous planning was essential to ensure the renovation work could be carried out as safely and efficiently as possible.
In addition to the external scaffolding, the project required a number of specifically designed cantilever sections for the church's lower roofs. Over 20 light duty aluminium towers were also needed for internal renovation work on the building's ceiling and windows.
A particular logistical challenge arose from the church's status as an active place of worship with busy weekend services. To accommodate this, JR Scaffold's light access team had to dismantle the internal towers each weekend and then re-erect them on Mondays, allowing renovation work to resume.
Alistair McKay, Contracts Manager at JR Scaffold Services, who led the project, commented: "This has been a fantastic project to have been involved in from the start. Everything from the detailed design process required to ensure that renovations across the church can go ahead smoothly, to the interesting logistics of the site being an active place of worship, has proven a great challenge for our team to get stuck into."
McKay added: "Everyone is very excited to see the end result of the refurbishment by the John Fulton's team and we're thrilled to be able to be a part of ensuring this important historic building in Glasgow, remains a key part of the West End community."
