SP Energy Networks has energised the UK's first non-sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) switchgear, supplied by Lucy Electric, marking a step forward in the UK's grid decarbonisation efforts.
The innovative Sabre EcoTec non-SF6 ring main unit (RMU) has been installed and energised at a substation in SP Energy Networks' Mid-Cheshire district. This RMU uses synthetic air instead of SF6, a potent greenhouse gas commonly used to insulate critical electrical network equipment.
According to the companies, the Sabre EcoTec unit is the only one designed to UK distribution network specifications. It enables lower emissions from network operations, addressing the challenge posed by the upcoming UK ban on SF6 in 2026. The EcoTec unit occupies the same space as traditional switchgear, fitting within existing substation footprints and allowing direct mounting to the transformer, avoiding costly adaptations.
SP Energy Networks emphasises that this installation is a key step in its development of sustainable substations, designed to be environmentally sustainable throughout their lifecycle. The company also highlighted its partnership with Lucy Electric, which involved inputting into the design and product development of EcoTec, alongside other UK distribution network operators. This collaboration ensured the RMU meets current specifications and future network needs, including incorporating automation technology as standard.
Eddie Mulholland, Process and Technology Director at SP Energy Networks, said: "This is a huge milestone, not just for SP Energy Networks, but for our industry as a whole, as we strive to decarbonise the grid and support a cleaner and greener future for us all. It's been fantastic to work with Lucy Electric to develop and deliver this innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective technology, which gives us the quality and performance we need without the greenhouse gas emissions. It's a real win-win. As the only electricity network operator in the UK to serve communities across England, Scotland and Wales, SP Energy Networks is leading the way and there will be more to come as we work with partners like Lucy Electric to deliver a better future, quicker."
John Griffiths, CEO of Lucy Electric, commented: "Lucy Electric is proud to be at the forefront of technological development for utilities. Through close collaboration with trusted partners such as SP Energy Networks, we have developed and energised the UK's first non-SF6 ring main unit, reducing emissions for UK network operators efficiently and cost-effectively. If implemented across the UK, EcoTec could save millions of tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. We look forward to rolling out more EcoTec units to serve the growing package substation market in the UK and beyond. At Lucy Electric, we remain committed to ensuring our utility partners are prepared for future regulatory changes and contribute to Net Zero goals and wider societal benefits."
