The recent widespread electricity outages that brought Spain and Portugal to a standstill have starkly highlighted the indispensable role that electricians play in the smooth functioning of modern society, according to SELECT, the trade association for the electrotechnical sector in Scotland.
The unprecedented power grid failures, which dominated news headlines globally, resulted in scenes of traffic chaos, empty supermarkets, and stranded transport, demonstrating the profound and immediate impact of electricity loss on everyday life. Cash machines ceased functioning, phone lines went down, internet access was lost, and essential services like water supply, powered by electric pumps, were disrupted. Even electric vehicles were rendered immobile.
While initial reports suggest the cause was a combination of unforeseen natural phenomena rather than human error or cyber attack, SELECT argues that the resulting chaos serves as a powerful reminder of our overwhelming dependence on electricity and, crucially, on the skilled professionals who maintain its supply.
In response to these events, SELECT has reiterated its long-standing campaign for the professional recognition of electricians in Scotland, emphasising their critical role in sustaining modern life.
"We used to say that the future was electric, but the scenes we all witnessed this week show that the NOW is electric – and we all depend on it to a staggering extent in every facet of our lives," SELECT stated.
The trade body believes the events in Spain and Portugal have provided a graphic illustration of society's vulnerability to power outages and stressed that fully trained and skilled electrical professionals are essential for restoring normalcy when such failures inevitably occur.
"Spain and Portugal showed us in graphic detail just how vulnerable and dependent we are. And when systems fail – as they inevitably will again in the future – it is fully-trained and suitably skilled electrical professionals who will reconnect us with our lives and each other," SELECT asserted.
The association argues that now is the opportune moment to formally recognise the vital importance of electricians and believes that regulating the industry and providing protected title for the profession would be the most appropriate form of recognition.
