A historic site on Bank Street in Coatbridge is being transformed as demolition begins on the former Sharks Mouth pub to make way for a new housing development.
The project marks a significant step in the town's regeneration efforts, with plans to build 16 new homes on the site. The development will include a mix of social rented and supported accommodation, tailored to meet the specific needs of the local community.
Local councillors, including Michael McPake, Convener of Housing, visited the site this week to see the demolition progress and learn more about the future of the project.
Parts of the old pub will be repurposed to form a boundary wall, creating a lasting physical connection to the site's past. Additionally, some original architectural features will be removed and preserved at the nearby Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life.
Councillor McPake said: "It's great to see first-hand the work on this important project, which will transform a disused and deteriorating site into high-quality homes for local people. Not only are we delivering much-needed housing, but we’re also preserving elements of the site's history, which will continue to have a place in the community through reuse and relocation. This is a great example of regeneration in action."
The project is part of a broader commitment to deliver new homes and revitalize town centres across the area.
Demolition is being carried out by Reigart and is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
