Story Scotland, a civil engineering specialist, has announced a strategic reorganisation to capitalise on increasing infrastructure investment across Scotland. The company is launching dedicated Transportation and Energy divisions to enhance its service delivery and strengthen its position in the market.
The move comes as Story Scotland anticipates significant opportunities within the transportation and energy sectors over the next decade. The company believes the restructure will create added value for clients and allow for a more focused approach to projects.
John MacArthur, Managing Director of Story Scotland, emphasised the importance of adapting the business model to meet the demands of these growing sectors. "We see significant investment in these areas over the next decade, so it's important that our business model is adapted in a way that allows us to respond to the challenges and opportunities this will bring. Having two distinct divisions brings ownership and accountability, enabling us to build stronger, more collaborative relationships with our clients."
MacArthur will be supported by Craig Lafferty, who takes on the role of Managing Director for the newly formed Transportation Division, and Alan Boyle, who is leading the Energy Division launched earlier this year. "Craig and Alan are two very accomplished business leaders in their own right, and together we can create something special in Scotland – a great place to work, a trusted partner for our clients, and a contractor that genuinely cares about the communities we work in," MacArthur added.
The Transportation Division already has a substantial pipeline of work, with around 40 projects secured under Network Rail's CP7 framework for the next 12 months. Key projects include the construction of a new train station in Barrhead, involvement in light rail works on the Edinburgh Trams network, and an expansion into the ports and harbours sector through a General Construction Framework appointment with Peel Ports Ltd.
The Transportation division is forecasting sales of £70m-£80m in the coming year, with ambitious plans to scale up to over £100m annually within five years. To facilitate this growth, Story Scotland intends to expand its workforce and supply chain, investing in skills development and talent acquisition.
Craig Lafferty brings 27 years of construction industry experience to his new role, having worked on large-scale projects across rail, nuclear, marine, highways, and petrochemical sectors. He commented: "The next 12 months promise to be incredibly exciting as we embark on delivering crucial infrastructure across a variety of engineering sectors. Our people are our greatest asset, and we're committed to fostering a collaborative culture that supports both our workforce and supply chain partners. Investing in apprenticeships and early careers recruitment will be an important part of our strategy, ensuring a strong pipeline of talent for the future."
Further strengthening the leadership team, Story Scotland appointed Campbell Connor as Commercial Director in 2024. With 35 years of experience in civil engineering infrastructure, including rail, roads, aviation, water, and nuclear sectors, he will be instrumental in shaping the company's commercial strategies.
With a clear focus on growth and talent development, Story Scotland's Transportation Division aims to play a significant role in shaping Scotland's infrastructure landscape. By embracing new opportunities and maintaining a commitment to professional delivery, the company is positioning itself to support the country's evolving transportation needs while fostering a positive workplace culture.
