The government has announced the formation of a new taskforce aimed at unlocking surplus public land for housing development. The initiative, which is currently making headlines, will involve a partnership approach to explore new delivery models and establish collaborative agreements between various government bodies, including the Ministry of Defence, Homes England, and Network Rail. The goal is to accelerate the construction of thousands of new homes on publicly owned land.
In response to the announcement, Rachael Williamson, interim director of policy, communications and public affairs at the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), offered a cautious welcome. She stated: "Unlocking surplus public land for new homes is a positive step toward addressing the country's housing challenges. Ensuring land is available and ready for development is critical, and efforts to remove barriers that have slowed progress in the past are very welcome."
However, Ms Williamson stressed that while the initiative is a positive move, the focus must extend beyond simply increasing the number of homes. She highlighted the importance of long-term collaboration between government departments, Homes England, and the private sector to ensure swift delivery. Furthermore, she emphasised the necessity of prioritising the development of homes across all tenures, particularly "genuinely affordable social housing."
Ms Williamson also pointed out the need to consider infrastructure and services alongside housing development to create sustainable communities. Additionally, she called for appropriate levels of government grants to support development.
Looking ahead, Ms Williamson stated that CIH awaits further details in the government's upcoming long-term housing strategy. She expressed particular interest in how this new initiative will support the delivery of housing that is accessible to those with the greatest need.
