Significant progress is being made on the strategic development site at the former ExxonMobil oil terminal in Bowling, which will include a much-anticipated alternative route to the A82. The large-scale industrial and commercial project is starting to take form, with site clearance nearing completion.
The site in Bowling is undergoing transformation to unlock its potential for mixed-use development, including storage, distribution, industrial, business, and office spaces. This joint investment project between West Dunbartonshire Council and the Glasgow City Region City Deal is funded by both the UK and Scottish Governments.
The development is projected to attract £20.6 million in additional private investment and contribute £331.4 million in net additional Gross Value Added (GVA) to the City Region over the next 25 years.
Key components of the project include junction, road, and active travel improvements connecting to the site. Notably, a 1.95km spine road will be constructed, providing an alternative route in and out of Dumbarton. The development also involves a phased implementation of raised platforms, ready for the construction of future buildings on the site.
Of the 150-acre area, 47 acres are earmarked for development, with plans for green network and green infrastructure enhancements, including a waterfront pedestrian and cycle path. Additionally, a heritage area has been identified around the listed structure of Dunglass Castle.
Councillor David McBride, Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, commented on the progress: "The start of this work is a hugely important milestone for commerce and infrastructure in West Dunbartonshire. Local residents will have noticed site clearance work which has opened up the views from the A82 and the nearby A814 road into Dumbarton at the Dumbuck junction. It is a massive site with huge potential and I cannot wait to see the benefits for the local community and those who use the nearby A82 when travelling further afield."
Councillor Lawrence O'Neill, Vice Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, added: "On completion of this project, this huge site will be opened up and it will offer excellent commercial opportunities, further boosting West Dunbartonshire as a commercial location. First class transport links and additional, scenic cycle routes are just some of the benefits from this large-scale project which is now truly taking shape."
Balfour Beatty was awarded the contract for the project, and work commenced earlier this year. The development is expected to significantly enhance the infrastructure and economic prospects of the region.
