Residents, workers, and anyone with a vested interest in the future of Greenock East are being urged to participate in a 'walk and talk' event to contribute their ideas on how to improve the area's physical environment and community safety.
Inverclyde Council has selected the area between Ladyburn Street and Belville Street in Greenock East to be part of a Place Standard pilot project, in collaboration with Public Health Scotland and the Scottish Community Safety Network. The pilot aims to develop a tailored 'community safety' version of the Place Standard tool, a widely recognised framework used to assess the quality of places.
The core of the project involves gathering detailed information by walking through the area with those who live, work, and spend time there. This direct engagement will inform the application of the Place Standard, which facilitates conversations about how places function for their users and helps pinpoint areas needing improvement.
The 'walk and talk' event is scheduled for Wednesday, 26 March 2025, between 9:30 am and 2:30 pm at Cappielow Football Stadium, Sinclair Street, Greenock. Participants will take a walk around the local area, lasting no more than an hour, to discuss their perceptions of safety and collectively identify priorities for improvements to the built environment and community spaces.
Councillor Michael McCormick, Inverclyde Council's convener of environment and regeneration, encouraged broad participation: "Everyone has opinions on what we should be prioritising to make things better where they live and work. This event is your chance to have your say."
He emphasised the value of on-the-ground observation: "The aim is that by walking around and discussing what we're seeing, we'll get better information to take forward, specifically about community safety."
Councillor McCormick, a long-time resident and worker in the area, anticipates strong community engagement: "I've lived and worked in the area all my life and I know people won't be shy in sharing their opinions. I would encourage as many people as possible to come along on the 26th."
Interested individuals can find more information and register their interest in attending the event by clicking on the link provided by Inverclyde Council. The outcomes of this community consultation will be crucial in shaping future development and improvement projects in Greenock East.
