A significant planning application has been submitted to North Lanarkshire Council for the extraction and remediation of 200 acres of land at Ravenscraig, marking a key milestone in the ongoing regeneration of the former steelworks site.
Ravenscraig is one of Europe's largest regeneration projects, with a masterplan designed to foster sustainable and inclusive growth, transforming the area into a mixed-use community space.
The land at Ravenscraig, once home to a vast steelworks facility, requires extensive remediation before any new development can take place. This process involves removing remnants of steel production and deep concrete foundations to prepare the site for future redevelopment. The remediation work is a major investment in the local community, with over 2 million cubic metres of material to be extracted, recycled, and backfilled.
The planning application covers the remediation of approximately 200 acres in the heart of the Ravenscraig site, representing around 20% of the total area. It includes key locations such as the Meadowhead area, which borders the new urban park The Craig and the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility, as well as land north of the New College Lanarkshire Motherwell Campus (Plots TC1-TC3).
Following a public consultation in August and September of this year, which involved extensive engagement with local stakeholders, additional landscape and ecology studies were carried out. These studies have helped shape the planning application, ensuring it meets the needs of both the community and the environment.
