Brunstane Primary School in Edinburgh is set to undergo a significant £10 million transformation to become one of the greenest schools in the capital.
Construction work, led by GRAHAM, commenced in October 2024 and is expected to be completed by winter 2025. The project involves a comprehensive retrofit of the school's infrastructure, including:
• Energy-efficient upgrades: Installation of air source heat pumps and electric heating systems, as well as photovoltaic panels, will reduce the school's carbon footprint.
• Building envelope improvements: New cladding, windows, and curtain walling will enhance the building's thermal performance and reduce energy consumption.
• Accessibility enhancements: Removal of steps and introduction of ramps will improve accessibility for all users.
• Interior refurbishment: Refurbishment of classrooms, offices, and amenity spaces will create modern and functional learning environments.
By implementing these sustainable measures, the school will not only reduce its environmental impact but also provide a healthier and more comfortable learning environment for students and staff.
The project will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption to the school's operations. Temporary classrooms will be installed on site to ensure that education continues uninterrupted.
This significant investment demonstrates the City of Edinburgh Council's commitment to sustainable development and creating a greener future for the city's young people.
Gary Holmes, regional managing director at GRAHAM Building North, said: "The significant investment made by City of Edinburgh Council to modernise Brunstane Primary School will create a vibrant and inspiring education centre.
"GRAHAM has a proven track record of delivering best-in-class education facilities across Scotland and we're proud to play a role in helping shape Edinburgh's next generation of school environments which prioritise accessibility and sustainability."
Councillor Joan Griffiths, Education, Children and Families Convener for the City of Edinburgh Councill, said: "We have over 100 schools supporting thousands of pupils and we're making every effort to make sure they are as welcoming, accessible, and sustainable as possible. Our £10 million investment in Brunstane Primary is a perfect example of this work, with energy efficiency improvements and repairs planned for the whole building. We have ambitious net zero aims as a city and this extends to upgrades to our schools, many of which are ageing. I'm excited to see the difference this retrofitting roll out will make."
