Kier has successfully completed a £11.4 million project to extend and refurbish Woodburn Primary School in Dalkeith, Midlothian. The project was delivered ahead of schedule, providing state-of-the-art facilities for pupils and staff.
The 2,262m² extension includes nine new classrooms, a new gym hall, and upgraded dining and kitchen facilities. The project also involved significant outdoor improvements, including new play areas, a sensory garden, and seating areas crafted from recycled materials.
Kier employed innovative construction techniques to minimise disruption and maximise efficiency. The use of smart sockets in site cabins reduced energy consumption by 53%, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable construction practices. Additionally, 10 tonnes of waste were diverted from landfill through donations to a local charity.
Beyond the physical construction, Kier has also contributed to the local community by creating jobs and work placement opportunities. The team delivered educational engagement events and donated £5,000 to local causes. As part of its social value commitment, Kier also carried out additional work, such as improving the Early Years' playground and resurfacing a nearby access road.
Phil McDowell, regional director for Kier North & Scotland, said: "We are thrilled to see pupils and staff at Woodburn Primary School enjoying their fantastic new facilities. Our expertise in design through to completion has enabled us to deliver an outstanding school on behalf of Midlothian Council whilst being sensitive to, and creative with, the environment around the site."
Councillor Kelly Parry, Midlothian Council Leader, said: "It's great to see the pupils and staff so excited about the new extension. And who could blame them? What a wonderful learning environment to help give our children the best start in life while providing excellent facilities for our wider community."
This project continues Kier's track record of delivering state-of-the-art schools across Scotland, with its portfolio including the delivery of the Passivhaus projects at Currie Community High School and Tain Academy as well as the latest contract award at St Kevin's Primary School in North Lanarkshire.
