The North Gate development, a remarkable affordable housing project located in Glasgow's southside, has achieved further recognition by being shortlisted for two prestigious awards: the Neave Brown Award for Affordable Housing and the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland prize.
Earlier this year, North Gate was already a finalist for the RIBA Awards. The Neave Brown Award, established in honour of the renowned architect and social housing pioneer, recognises the UK's most outstanding new affordable housing developments.
The shortlisted projects, including North Gate, showcase the positive impact of social housing in blending quality design, community regeneration, and social value. From projects that prioritize green space like Unity Place and Dover Court to those that revitalize vacant sites like North Gate Social Housing and Chowdhury Walk, these developments demonstrate the power of affordable housing to enhance communities.
Jury Chair and 2023 Neave Brown Award for Housing winner, Astrid Smitham, said: "At a time when the UK sets out to build 1.5 million new homes, this shortlist shows the importance of great partnerships between clients and architects in delivering housing of the very highest standard, that everyone deserves. From a new generation of council homes in Hackney and low-carbon homes in Islington, to a residential landmark in Glasgow designed for older residents and an ambitious masterplan in Brent, these projects show how the next wave of UK home building can help individuals and communities to thrive."
The announcement is the latest in a long line of recognition the development has received in the last 12 months.
Designed by Page\Park Architects, North Gate provides dedicated social housing for residents aged 55 and over, with a landmark urban block that completes the Crown Street Regeneration Masterplan.
Having already secured a RIAS (Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland) Award – and a further nomination for the coveted Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Prize – the winner will be announced at the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Stirling Prize ceremony on Wednesday 16 October 2024 at The Roundhouse in London.
