Ayr Town Centre Seeks Input On Framework Development Consultation

South Ayrshire Council is seeking input on the development of the Ayr Town Centre Framework.

The Framework sets out the key priority projects for Ayr Town Centre that will support place-making and make the town a more successful place to live, work, visit and enjoy.

The aim of the framework is to create a clear delivery & action plan based on achievable projects and initiatives. This will make Ayr more successful, building on the town's strengths and creating a stronger more mixed-use town centre.

Promoting access, creating safe more appealing places, and extending the reasons to visit will help drive additional footfall and strengthen the demand for goods and services.

The framework outlines a number of high-level projects which are key to achieving these ambitions. These include the Hourstons and Arran Mall Care Village; Transport Interchange, Accessible Ayr; The Esplanade; the development of the Kyle Quarter; Robert Burns Square Upgrade programme to support heritage, arts and creative attractions and a new Transport Interchange.

An online public survey will be launched on 15 January 2024 at www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/consultations.

A public engagement drop in event will take place within the Cutty - Sark Centre in Ayr on:

Wednesday 17 January from 4pm until 8pm

Thursday 18 January from 12pm to 4:30pm

Saturday 27 January from 12pm to 4:30pm

Although the framework has yet to be adopted, several of the projects, such as the 'Living Well Village' at the former Hourstons building, are already well advanced.

Demolition works are set to start in May 2024. This will see one of the extension blocks at the back of Hourstons removed along with the Arran Mall.

The Ayr Esplanade strategy is also progressing well. The aim is to improve amenities and provide quality public spaces which can be used by residents and visitors.

Councillor Bob Pollock, Economic Development Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: "This framework will be a real game changer, the intention is to rebalance, regenerate and repopulate the heart of Ayr, leading to a more vibrant and successful town centre. Some of the projects under the framework are well advanced, but we're encouraging the public to share their views on all the initiatives."

Councillor Martin Kilbride, Buildings, Housing and Environment Portfolio Holder said: "It's fantastic that we're progressing with the redevelopment of the Hourstons site. The demolition will mark the start of work which will lead to one of the first care villages in Scotland. As well as bringing a range of healthcare provision into one location, the project will also bring more people into the town and help boost the local economy."

Councillor Alec Clark, Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs Portfolio Holder said: "The strategy for the Esplanade is a great opportunity to enhance Ayr's reputation as one of the best seaside locations in Scotland. We want to make more of the Esplanade so providing more activities and relaxing spaces is key. We're already expanding the use of the Low Green for events, so revitalising the shorefront is a natural step."

The Ayr Town Centre Framework consultation will run until 1 March 2024.

Once all the feedback has been gathered, the framework will go before Councillors in April 2024.
