South Lanarkshire Housing Standards To Meet Climate Challenges

Construction News Image
All new homes in South Lanarkshire are built to meet high sustainability standards for energy efficiency, insulation and supporting renewable energy sources.

Investing in high quality insulation, renewable energy solutions and energy efficiency within the home is the best option for the environment and for household budgets.

The council has supported Scottish Housing Day since it was launched and is proud to once again be supporting the event this year.

Scottish Housing Day is about celebrating the impact that housing makes to the lives of people and communities across the country as well as communicating to people what their housing options are. This year, it also focusses on the role of housing in tackling the climate emergency.

To mark the occasion Chair of Housing & Technical Resources, Councillor Josh Wilson visited one of the council's latest housing developments at Highstonehall in Hamilton.

Cllr Wilson said: "On this site as on all of our Home+ developments we are delivering the highest quality of home we can and we build in excellence in environmental standards as part of the specification.

"By ensuring high standards of energy efficiency and insulation, and incorporating renewable technologies we are delivering a more affordable future for our tenants and a better environment for all our futures."

Cllr Wilson was joined by Executive Director of Housing Resources Daniel Lowe who said: "Our guiding principle across all our new developments and our investment in existing stock is to deliver the best we can.

"We have been investing in sustainable technology, energy efficiency and insulation for many years now and will continue to push innovation that helps us do our bit to meet the climate challenge.

"Efficient energy use not only reduces running costs, but also produces important environmental benefits. The production and use of energy in all its forms is one of the key impacts on the environment."

The development at Highstonehall was delivered by a range of partners including South Lanarkshire Council (SLC), Hub South West, and Miller Homes and was supported by funding from the Scottish Government’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme and City Deal.

Highstonehall is just one of the sites across South Lanarkshire where new sustainable housing is being developed by SLC and its partners. City Deal funding for remediation and improved access and connectivity has enabled the regeneration of vacant land in key locations.

Hub South West Development Manager Shaun Sands said: "We are supporting South Lanarkshire Council to deliver for their current and future tenants by helping ensure their new homes can harness the best technology at best value, considering whole life costing and incorporating green technology to support sustainable development.

"The housing sector is one Hub South West has moved into in recent years, and now with a housing pipeline of over £180m we are working collaboratively and consistently with our supply chain to deliver quality and environmentally conscientious housing on behalf of our participants."

SLC Area Housing Manager Deirdre Duncan said: "Our new tenants have only recently begun moving into their new homes in Highstonehall but the feedback from them is fantastic, as it has been on all our new housing sites. They are really pleased with both the space and the standard of the build."
