Govt To Call In ACAS For Forth Replacement Crossing Pay Audit

Construction News Image
Advisory firm ACAS are to be called in to audit the Forth Replacement Crossing construction project.

The company is being asked to carry out a pay audit by Economy Secretary Keith Brown after Ucatt revealed migrant workers were being severely underpaid for their work.

After meeting with the union and Labour MSP Neil Findlay, who had previously tabled a motion in the Scottish Parliament highlighting the issue, Secretary Brown revealed he would appoint ACAS to audit the project, as well look into the use of umbrella companies, health and safety, and the exploitation of migrant workers.

Mr Findlay said: "I am pleased Keith Brown has backed our call for ACAS to get involved in this matter, so we can ensure workers don't get ripped off on this flagship government project. UCATT members have first-hand experience of working with tradesmen and contractors on site and know that the treatment of workers there is unacceptable.

"These are long-standing issues which have been raised with the Government time and again. Ministers must ensure they deliver on their promises this time."

If the audit proves workers have been underpaid, Ucatt said it will seek "retrospective reimbursement for all workers short paid".

Steve Dillon, the organisation's Scotland Regional Secretary, said: "UCATT supports the involvement of ACAS in taking forward a pay audit of contractors and workers on site and we look forward to working with ACAS in addressing a whole range of fair work issues.

"This is a key infrastructure project and should be an exemplar of good practice in employment. All we ask is that they adhere to negotiated industry agreements and provide a safe workplace for our members."
