Plans have been revealed to build thousands of new homes in Glasgow.
In a report brought before the city council on Wednesday, 27 September, proposals were outlined on future development details for the Greater Easterhouse area over the next 20 years.
Proposals include creating 6,000 new homes, a wetlands park featuring a redeveloped Provanhall House, new nurseries and schools, an improved public realm and new transport infrastructure/greenspace.
The area has attracted over £400million of public and private sector investment in the past 20 years to regenerate the area. A total of 3,000 new homes have been built, including the Glasgow Fort shopping centre.
In addition, 180-acres of vacant land has been identified to build the new homes on, subject to the creation of necessary infrastructure.
The report details various projects ongoing in Easterhouse, such as 800 homes being delivered in Garthamlock and other developments in Ruchazie, Barlanark, Stepford Road and many more. So far, 10 sites have been identified as potential locations on which to build private homes.
Existing homes are also being improved with almost 250 properties benefiting from the council's HEEPS-ABS energy efficiency scheme. The Shandwick Centre will also be redeveloped as a commercial asset, while proposals are in place to transform Seven Lochs Wetland Park into a new heritage and nature park. Further private sector housing development could also take place on the site.
Council Leader Frank McAveety said: "The plans for the future of Easterhouse are thrilling. When complete, the area will be transformed into one that acts as an eastern gateway into Glasgow and a fantastic retail, cultural and leisure destination for visitors from the rest of the city and beyond. I look forward to working with our partners to realise this vision of a part of the city that has fantastic potential to exploit its built and natural resources.
"We will build on the successes of recent years to complete the regeneration of Easterhouse to deliver an area of Glasgow that is attractive as a place in which to live, work, invest and visit."
