Major improvements currently underway in Kirkintilloch town centre will not create a 'shared space' as preparations are finalised for the next phase of works, East Dunbartonshire Council confirmed.
The Council's contractor - Rainton Construction - will close sections of Catherine Street and Kerr Street from Wednesday 29 June to 19 July to allow the next tranche of improvements to take place - including new controlled pedestrian crossings.
The works include:
• Controlled crossings in Catherine Street and Kerr Street
• 60mm kerbs - which balance the needs of visually-impaired pedestrians, as well as wheelchair users and parents with prams, etc
• Courtesy crossings which feature tactile materials and strong tonal contrast
• Bollards and raised tables
• Introduction of a 20mph speed limit
• Formation of an Equality Design Forum to address detailed issues.
The overall project is due to be completed before summer 2017.
Council Leader Rhondda Geekie said: "No-one is excluded from the town centre - and no-one will be excluded - regardless of their needs or requirements.
"We are not creating a 'shared space' in Kirkintilloch town centre - and that is due in large part to the efforts of campaigners such as EDVIP, as well as consultation with a range of groups, individuals, traders and residents.
"We listened to feedback and made a number of changes - most notably the creation of new controlled crossings in Catherine Street and Kerr Street, as well as the introduction of a 20mph limit. That is in addition to the existing controlled crossing at Barleybank."
Councillor Geekie added, "I would encourage everyone to come and see the first phase for themselves. The new-look stretch of road between Townhead Bridge and Catherine Street opened this week - enhancing the area and providing a promising sign of things to come for Kirkintilloch.
"There are some small snagging issues to be resolved, but it is looking very good indeed.
"Come and see the evolving town centre for yourself, and support local shops, restaurants, cafes and services at the same time."
The next phase of improvement works will begin in Kirkintilloch next Wednesday (29 June) - coinciding with the start of the school summer holidays.
