Approval Granted For £6m North Lanarkshire Link Road

Construction News Image
Approval has been granted to build a new £6 million link road in North Lanarkshire.

A new road and two roundabouts will be built to open up access between Glenboig, Gartcosh Business Park and the M73, as well as unlocking development opportunities over the next 20 years.

The infrastructure project was given the go ahead by Glasgow City Region City Deal Cabinet and will be the first scheme to be undertaken in North Lanarkshire through the agreement.

Features include:

• improvements to Auldyards Road.

• construction of a new road between Gartcosh Business Park and Glenboig and creating a new roundabout at Glenboig Road.

• installing new lighting, foot and cycle paths and drainage.

• extending Gartcosh Local Nature Reserve by approximately 2.15 hectares and creating a new entrance feature.

Cllr Allan Graham said: "This new road is a catalyst for the regeneration of Gartcosh and Glenboig, opening up opportunities for sustainable residential and business developments.

"It will mean improved access for residents in these villages, and boost the potential of this location to developers we already know are keen to invest there. The Gartcosh Glenboig Community Growth Area is expected to see around 3,000 new houses built over the next 20 years, and this new road is an essential part of the infrastructure needed to deliver this ambition."

The tender process for the construction work will be prepared for approval by the City Deal Cabinet in October, with work due to begin at the end of 2016.
