The Scottish Borders Council (SBC) is inviting residents to comment on a flood protection scheme in Hawick.
Currently, the project is being taken forward with investigations, various surveys and the development of the outline design being undertaken, along with consultations.
It is understood the project will cost around £30 million, with other costs in the design and development of the scheme.
As part of the process, a number of statutory authorities need to be consulted and give consent to the Scheme, including Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), as well as planning conditions being met.
If the Scottish Government approves funding, the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme is scheduled to begin construction in 2019 and be completed by 2022.
However, if a public local enquiry is required, at least a further 9 to 12 months will be added to the timeline.
Councillor Gordon Edgar said: "The people of Hawick can be assured that this project is a priority for the Council.
"While Storm Desmond caused significant damage and disruption, it has ironically provided helpful information for the development of the Scheme’s outline design, which is currently taking place.
"It is absolutely crucial that people in Hawick engage with the Council’s project team during the outline design phase, to allow any concerns to be mitigated now. Any objection raised after the outline design could lead to significant delays to the project."
