Inverclyde Council has submitted a planning application for a £2m refurbishment project.
Proposals have been put forward to redevelop the former James Watt Memorial College in Greenock.
Plans involve developing modern standards of office accommodation for the council's environmental services.
Works include installing a lift, new heating and ventilation systems, and the repair of the existing B-listed façade.
The design team have developed their plans for the building in conjunction with the Planning Authority, Historic Scotland and the council.
Councillor Michael McCormick said: "This building is an important landmark in Greenock and dates back over 100 years so I am particularly pleased we are pressing ahead to restore, preserve and protect its distinctive architecture.
"Over the years the interior has fallen into a relatively poor state of repair and of course, given its age, it does not meet modern disability access requirements. If approved, these plans will provide new, modern offices for our staff while breathing new life into an iconic Inverclyde building."
