A plan to develop the new £25 million Our Lady St Patricks's High School (OLSP) on the Council-owned site in Bellsmyr has been delayed, according to West Dunbartonshire Council.
A European ruling affecting how some projects are financed by the Scottish Government has caused the delay.
Planning permission for the new three-storey high school was granted in March, which includes two all-weather sports pitches, two gyms, a fitness room and a three-court games hall.
The new ruling also impacts developments supported through the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) Schools for the Future programme.
The SFT and Scottish Government are working with the Office of National Statistics to find a solution.
Councillor Michelle McGinty, Convener of Educational Services, said: "Like most parents of children attending OLSP I am a bit disappointed to learn about the delay in construction work starting but I accept the Scottish Government and the Scottish Futures Trust are doing everything they can to resolve the issue."
