A 17th Century burial chamber located at Dunlop Parish Church in East Ayrshire, is to be restored thanks to £7,490 in funding from Historic Scotland.
The chamber was built in 1641 by James, Viscount Clandeboye for his parents – Hans Hamilton and Janet Dedholm. The sandstone structure has a crowstepped gable, stone roof, roll-moulded doorway and monuments, with intricate stone carvings on the interior and exterior. The interior of the vault was originally plastered and decorated with paint and gilding, and contained two kneeling statues of Hans Hamilton and his wife.
Due to historic damage to the roof, the statues were removed from the structure and stored for safe keeping. Under the investment programme, the roof will now be restored
It is understood East Ayrshire Council is funding the scheme, but the funding from Historic Scotland will be used to reinstate the interior marble stones and the exterior memorial stone.
Work on the project is scheduled to begin in May 2015.
