Golf facilities in South Ayrshire are set to be upgraded after the local authority agreed to a series of proposals that will not only build on the current support base, but also encourage new investment.
Currently, the sport is worth around £4m to South Ayrshire, but the Council has said it wants to increase this investment. One of the main proposals includes the essential planned maintenance, refurbishment and upgrades to off-course facilities. Investment is already planned for Belleisle and Girvan clubhouses, while plans to improve Troon Clubhouse are also in the pipeline.
Welcoming the investment, Councillor Bill Grant, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure, said: "Golf is a huge global business and, as the home of Open golf, we are ideally placed, geographically and historically, to maximise its appeal and make it a core business activity – for the benefit of the whole area.
"The spin-offs from the sport, in terms of boosting economic development, tourism and positioning South Ayrshire as one of the best places in the world to enjoy this exciting sport, cannot be underestimated.
"The plans to develop golf are forward looking, exciting and have far reaching importance for us all, as we work to position South Ayrshire as a prime location for golfers the world over."
