Minister Sturgeon has defended a decision to demolish a number of Glasgow's famous Red Road tower blocks as part of this year's opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.
The plans have been surrounded in controversy since they details were released, with many arguing that the move is disrespectful and insensitive to those who have lived in the properties over the years.
Organisers have said that the demolition will demonstrate how the city is in fact moving forward and undergoing a period of regeneration.
Speaking to BBC Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's deputy First Minister has defended the proposals, saying it is a "good idea".
When asked if she was in favour or against the demolition, Ms Sturgeon is quoted as saying: "No, I think it's a good idea. "I think it is something that can help us both celebrate the history of Glasgow and look forward to the future of Glasgow. Obviously these things have to be done sensitively."
She added that it is important to listen to the views of the people of Glasgow with regards to the plans. Talks regarding the demolition are due to be held next week.
An online petition opposing the demolition was launched earlier this week by former Socialist MSP Carolyn Leckie. At the time of writing, more than 15,000 people have signed the petition, which reads: "Stop the plan to demolish Red Road flats as part of Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.
"The homes and communities of families should be demolished with dignity. If the flats are not fit for 'human' habitation, the message to the residents (asylum seeking families) in the remaining block is that they are not human enough to deserve decent housing."
Two of the Red Road blocks have already been demolished. While a further five are due to be destroyed as part of Glasgow 2014, the final block of flats, in Petershill Court, is expected to be demolished at a later date.
