Construction work has started on a new housing development in Robertland Square, Stewarton.
The scheme is part of East Ayrshire Council's wider aim of promoting town centre living.
Situated on the former Robertland Hostel site, the project will provide supported accommodation for older people. The facility will include two two-bed homes for wheelchair users, with integral car ports, and six two-bed homes specially designed for older people.
Built in partnership with McTaggart Construction, and supported by funding from the Scottish Government, the homes are expected to be completed by December 2014.
Visiting the site, Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council, said: "The Council's Strategic Local Programme will see 200 affordable homes being built in town centres across East Ayrshire, which will promote town centre living and in turn aid town centre regeneration.
"The Robertland Square site has been specially designed for older and ambulant disabled people providing specialist housing for some of our most vulnerable residents.
"There have been some very nice touches included in the plans, like covered car ports which will provide easy access to the homes.
"The area will also be landscaped so the homes won't be just practical but will be set within a very attractive development."
Morris McTaggart, Director of McTaggart Construction, added: "As an Ayrshire based business, the Housing investment programme is providing real employment opportunities and a boost to the local economy with our commitment to working with local subcontractors, labour and suppliers.
"Ayrshire based contractors in Groundworks, Timber Frame, Plumbing, Joinery and Electrical have been appointed to the contract."
