Almost 40 new properties are to be constructed at Brucehill, Dumbarton, the local authority has said.
The development, which forms part of West Dunbartonshire Council's new build house programme, will see 38 new homes created at the site and will include two wheelchair accessible properties, family homes and flats in Hill Street, Brucehill.
In addition to the houses, a community garden will also be built on the site, with pupils from Brucehill Early Education and Childcare Centre are among those providing input on the designs.
The Brucehill project, which will be completed by March 2015, has attracted £1.9m of Scottish Government funding.
The local authority has said a contractor will be appointed to work on the development in March with the scheme possibly on site by May.
It is the first time in 25 years that a new-build housing project has been designed and procured in-house by the council and plans are expected to go before the authority's planning committee later this month.
Councillor David McBride, Housing Convener, said: "This is another step towards providing much-needed social rented housing in Brucehill, including new family homes, and will also regenerate a site which has lain vacant for years.
"This project is a great example of what can be achieved when a community and the council works together."
Councillor Lawrence O'Neill, Vice-Convener of Housing, added: "Upon completion of this project in Brucehill, we will have built 122 new council homes in West Dunbartonshire, the first in a generation. This demonstrates our commitment to regenerating our communities by providing quality houses for our tenants."
