This month will mark the opening of Scotland's first ever purpose-built integrated campus for a mainstream primary school and an additional support needs school at Maxwellton Primary School and Greenburn School in East Kilbride.
The project, which cost £8.7m, was constructed by Kier Construction and was handed over five weeks early and under budget.
Built over two levels, the campus has therapy rooms, a sensory room, a soft play room and a hydrotherapy pool. Elsewhere, additional fire lifts have been installed to allow those pupils with additional needs, access to the upper floor.
A palette of neutral colours and muted graphics has been used in order to create a peaceful atmosphere for pupils with additional needs, and outside there are both hard and soft play areas.
As work on the project took place, pupils attended the adjacent Maxwellton and Greenburn schools. Demolition of these buildings, as well as further landscape enhancements, will take place once pupils have moved into the new campus after the October break.
Jan McLaren, Head Teacher at Maxwellton Primary, said that she and her staff are "utterly delighted" with the results, while the pupils are: "Excited at the prospect of the move to a bright, stimulating and motivating working environment. They cannot wait to get in and get started."
